About Runenym

A fantasy name generator built by someone who actually cares about the linguistics behind the names.

Meet the Creator

Hi, I'm Callum Thorne. I built Runenym because I spent years looking for a fantasy name generator that didn't just mash random syllables together — one that actually respected the linguistic traditions behind the names it produced. I never quite found it, so I made my own.

My background is a bit unusual for someone building a name generator. I studied medieval studies at the University of York, where I completed an MA focusing on comparative linguistics. That meant spending a lot of time with Old English, Old Norse, and Celtic naming conventions — the real ones, from manuscripts and sagas, not just the ones in fantasy novels. I got fascinated by how names work: how sound patterns carry cultural weight, why certain phonemes feel "elvish" and others feel "dwarven," and how real-world naming traditions shaped the fantasy tropes we all know and love.

I've also been playing D&D for over fifteen years, starting with 3.5 edition as a teenager. I've been a forever DM for most of that time, running campaigns in the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and more homebrew worlds than I can count. I've been the person frantically naming an NPC three seconds before the players walk into a tavern. I know the pain.

Runenym is where those two worlds meet — academic linguistics and years at the gaming table. Every generator is built on carefully researched phonetic patterns and naming conventions, so the names don't just sound right, they feel right for the culture they represent.

How It Works

Each generator uses carefully crafted linguistic rules — phonetic patterns, syllable structures, and naming conventions that capture the essence of each fantasy race, class, or theme.

Elven names flow with soft consonants and musical vowels. Dwarven names ring with the hard sounds of hammer on anvil. Dragon names carry ancient weight and power. Every generator is designed to produce names that feel right — because they're grounded in the same linguistic patterns that inspired the fantasy traditions in the first place.

All generation happens instantly in your browser — no waiting for servers, no API limits, works offline once loaded. No accounts, no ads, no "premium" tier. Just names.
